Crack in Progress

There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in. (Leonard Cohen)

Glass pours out of the car windows thus seducing the public to perceive the uneasy beauty of destruction and decay… in the late 80ties I myself was confronted with a smashed car window (radio stolen)  … although the scene was one of shock and anger, I was also struck by the beauty of the shattered glass in the moist street light. Since then I have used broken glass in many ways in my artwork.
Later (2003) in Venice I saw a huge billboard showing a young girl on a garden swing.
“…crash in progress” I read. From that moment, in my mind, the “Crack in Progress” became unavoidable… I only needed an opportunity.
Finally in 2013 I made this object for the Amsterdam Light Festival.

…“Crack in Progress” pays tribute to all, by junkies, hooked on heroine & crack, smashed car windows.
